Henry Yan Figure Drawing Book

Bio:

Henry Yan has been teaching at Academy of Art University in San Francisco for more than twenty years. He teaches figure and portrait drawing and painting for the schools of Fine Arts, Foundations, and Illustrations of the University. His book, "Henry Yan's Figure Drawing – Techniques and Tips" published in 2006, has been widely used by art students and professional artists in the US and internationally. Other than teaching for the Art University, he has also widely been invited in running seminars and workshops in USA, Canada, Europe and Asia, large amount of his works have been collected internationally.

Course description:

Drawing- Students will learn the techniques and whole procedures of drawing figure/head/with charcoals. In short and long pose practices students will improve their skill in drawing accurate human proportions, anatomy, and shading, as well as the application of various line works, edge control, lost and found, composition and design. Different techniques introduced in the book "Henry Yan's Figure Drawing-Techniques and Tips", will also be explained and practiced in class.

Painting- Students will practice in traditional, as well as contemporary ways of painting of human figures/portraiture.
From limited color palette for quick paintings, to full color palette long time paintings. Different techniques will be introduced and practiced. Demos and individual help will show students how to mix good colors to paint realistically; as well as expressive, contemporary approaches.

Skills like how to mute colors in order to match the right values; how to handle color temperatures; method of premixing colors; the application of various thin and thick brushwork, edge control, lost and found, composition and design, etc, will be explained.
This class is for all levels students.

Day 1

-Arrival (*Rome is the recommended airport). In our commitment to making your traveling experience to Le Marche as easy and convenient as possible, your host, Piero Pagliardini, will meet you at the airport (*see time stipulations) and escort you to Hotel Taddeo e Federico in the heart of the beautiful village, Sant'Angelo in Vado.

-Take time to settle in, unpack and explore the village a bit before we all meet up. The hotel is within walking distance of shops, markets, restaurants and village life unspoiled by time.

-Henry, and our host and native Marchigiano, Piero Pagliardini, will welcome you over drinks and give an overview of the week to come. Then pizza night! Enjoy the best pizza in town in an authentic Italian pizzeria. End the night with a stroll, a nightcap, and a good night's sleep.

Day 2

-Pastries (or le paste) and cappuccino at your hotel.

-Morning class with Henry. You'll receive plenty of individual attention in this very small class, with students working at their own pace.

-Break for a delicious seasonal lunch followed by time to relax.

-Explore village life, including a visit to the Roman Villa, "Domus of Myths" and the "Museo dei Mestieri."

-Dinner at one of our favorite restaurants!

Day 3

-Breakfast at your hotel.

-Morning class with Henry. You'll receive plenty of individual attention in this very small class, with students working at their own pace.

-Break for a delicious seasonal lunch.

-Free time to work on your projects.

-Early afternoon trip to the Metauro River itself. Trek through blue lagoons and navigate miniature waterfalls as you get your feet wet and learn the history of the area. Bring your swimsuit and water shoes!

-Dinner to follow in a truly off-the-beaten-path location.

Day 4

-Enjoy a local breakfast at the hotel (have you tried the chocolate pastries yet?).

-Henry and Piero will pick you up to go to Urbino, the city considered the center of Renaissance! Time to wander the main squares and winding medieval pathways as you're immersed in local color, texture, and flavors. This year marks the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, one of Italy's greatest Renaissance painters. A show displaying some of Raphael's greatest works in context with some other Renaissance artists will be on display. In addition, the city will hold trade shows, conferences and spaces dedicated to literature and dance! This will include a stop at a professional Italian art store!

-Marchigiano lunch and gelato at one of our favorite restaurants.

-Return to Sant'Angelo in Vado for afternoon class with Henry.

-Free time and dinner on your own, for an Italian Saturday night live!

Day 5

-Morning outing to Mercatello sul Metauro. An expert guide will lead us on a light walking tour revealing all the hidden treasures of this charming village.

-Break for an authentic lunch at Castello della Pieve, a medieval castle in the municipal area of Mercatello sul Metauro. In 1301 Dante Alighieri's exile was decreed from this tiny hilltop town.

-Return to Sant'Angelo in Vado.

-Afternoon class with Henry.

-Group dinner full of local flavor.

Day 6

-Breakfast at the hotel, and then off to stroll through the traveling open-air market! From clothing to coffee cups, you can find the perfect gifts to take home, all while sampling savory olives, freshly shaved prosciutto and roasted chestnuts.

-Lunch at the Enoteca, located in the heart of the market, featuring fried fish, salami, cheese with a Sparkling Wine Tasting, prosecco and the best Italian Spumante. (*non-fish items available)!

-Last day of class with Henry! We will finish up our paintings and review lessons shared.

-Time to pack at the hotel.

-Meet that evening for a farewell dinner where we will raise a glass (or two, or three!) to our week in Le Marche. Cin-cin! Cheers! And a warm salute until next year!

Day 7

- Departures (*Please arrange departures for after 4:00 pm.).

Time Stipulations

-Pick-ups at FCO Rome airport will be offered between 8:00-11:00 a.m.

-Departures at FCO Rome airport will be offered from 2:00 pm onward. In order to arrive for your flight with ample time, we recommend scheduling departing flights after 4:00 p.m.

-Pick-up and Departures from other locations, or at times outside these parameters can be arranged at an additional fee.
